Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. This treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, age spots, large pores, reduced elasticity, acne scars and stretch marks. It improves the skin’s texture and tone and is a fantastic natural alternative to Botox, chemical peels or other invasive procedures.
What is the Microneedling Procedure?
Before getting started, your practitioner will use a topical anesthetic to reduce the chances of discomfort. Then, your practitioner creates small micro channels under the skin with a pen-like tool. Your practitioner will move the tool evenly across your skin so that the new skin that rejuvenates will be even, too. The millimeter depth of the needle depends on the type of skin concern and area of the face being treated.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Miniscule pinpricks from the procedure cause a slight injury to the epidermis layer of the skin and the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue to repair the injury. This new skin tissue is smoother in tone and texture. We all normally lose collagen in our skin tissue via age or injury. By encouraging the skin to make new tissue, there may be more collagen to help make the skin firmer. In addition, when the skin re-epithelializes, the epidermis is thicker which allows your skin to rejuvenate faster in the future.
Microneedling can be used on the entire body including the face, neck, decolletage, arms, back, c-section scars, stretch marks, and even locations where moles have been removed. It is safe for most skin types. At Skin Deep Naples, we also use the Tensage by BioPelle which heals the skin as the treatment is given. It helps to shorten healing time, optimize procedural outcomes and reduce side effects with visible improvement in as little as 24 hours.
What Can I Expect After the Procedure?
You’ll need about 4-5 days of down time where you want to stay out of the sun as much as possible and refrain from using any harsh skin products like exfoliants or scrubs. Initially it will look and feel like a mild sunburn. The procedure will dehydrate your skin slightly and create controlled microinjuries, so the cells rush to the surface to heal. There may be some pinpoint bleeding. During healing, avoid retinal products, acids and glycolyics. You want to avoid intense exercise or other activities that promote excessive sweating, as you want to keep the skin as clean as possible. Stay hydrated and avoid coffee and alcohol as well. We recommend treatment every 6-8 weeks for best results.
Are There Any Contraindications to Microneedling?
You may not be an ideal candidate for microneedling if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have certain skin diseases, such as psoriasis or eczema
- Have open wounds
- Have had radiation therapy recently
- Have a history of skin scars
Overall, microneedling is a fantastic alternative to invasive skin rejuvenation procedures, especially Botox. You will see a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and experience a softer and smoother tone and texture of your skin. Even your makeup goes on more smoothly. In addition, the microchannels created through microneedling allows your skincare products to be absorbed more effectively into deeper layers of the skin the entire time you’re healing.
