When I adopted Raleigh – my rescued beagle mix –he was underweight, skittish, and had a backend filled with bird shot. I wanted to make up for his rough past and give him the best life possible, so I set out to learn what I could about canine health and wellness. Many pet owners consider their pets to be family members and are becoming more proactive in caring for their animals.

Over the last 15 years, the pet supply industry has expanded with many new, innovative items geared toward wellness – particularly for dogs. Three categories of products are important: premium pet foods and treats, harnesses and products that address orthopedic needs, and toys that stimulate dog’s minds and bodies.

Premium foods and treats typically avoid animal-by-products (which are derived from slaughterhouse waste) and wheat (which is a common allergen for dogs). Consumers are becoming more mindful of ingredients and many are choosing brands that are made in the U.S. with locally-sourced or organic ingredients. Some pet owners avoid commercially prepared foods entirely and opt to cook for their dogs, often with the help of a veterinary nutritionist who may suggest supplements such as calcium or fish oil to ensure that a home-cooked diet meets nutritional requirements.

Harnesses are becoming preferred over collars for dogs who tend to pull while on the leash. Most harnesses are designed to reduce pressure on the neck, in order to prevent choking or spinal injuries. Manufacturers are becoming more thoughtful in the design of harnesses in order to fit a range of different breeds and sizes. Some companies are also utilizing hemp for harnesses, leashes, and toys. Because hemp is sustainable, durable, washable, and soft it is an excellent choice for pets, owners, and the environment.

Toy options for dogs have grown beyond the basic ball or squeaky toy. Puzzle toys are designed to mentally engage dogs by making them use problem solving skills in order to earn a treat reward. Agility tunnels can be a great tool for adding interest to backyard play. By engaging dogs both physically and mentally, toys can deter destructive behaviors – such as chewing on shoes or furniture— that are often a result of boredom or anxiety.

Paying attention to our pets’ needs for exercise and stimulation, also benefits humans by reminding us of the value of play, spending time outdoors, and being more fully present in our lives. Most pet owners can attest to how spending time with their beloved dog or cat can lower stress. The mutually beneficial relationship between people and pets is also well documented in research. Studies show that spending time with pets can decrease obesity, lower blood pressure, increase serotonin levels, and boost the immune system. So, when we do our best to enhance our pets’ health, wellness, and longevity, we enhance our own as well.
